Ingredients
- 2 pre-made msemen squares (or dough for 2, see msemen recipe)
- 3 tbsp chocolate-hazelnut spread
- 1 banana, sliced
- Neutral oil, for cooking
- Icing sugar, optional, to finish
Method
- 1
Cook the msemen
Cook the msemen squares on a hot, lightly oiled griddle until golden and crisp on both sides, or warm through if using pre-made squares.
- 2
Spread
While still warm, spread each square generously with chocolate-hazelnut spread.
- 3
Fill
Lay banana slices over the spread on one half of each square.
- 4
Fold
Fold the msemen over the filling, pressing gently, and return briefly to the warm griddle so the spread melts a little further.
- 5
Serve
Dust with icing sugar if desired and serve immediately, cut into pieces.
Chef's tips
- Spread the chocolate-hazelnut spread while the msemen is still warm so it melts into the layers.
- A brief return to the griddle after folding warms the filling through and lightly crisps the outside again.
- This treat is best eaten right away, while the banana is fresh and the msemen still flaky and warm.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a traditional Moroccan dish?
It is a modern street food adaptation, popular with younger crowds at evening food stalls, built on the traditional msemen base with a contemporary sweet filling.
What other fillings work well?
Sliced strawberries, a drizzle of honey, or a scattering of chopped nuts all work well alongside or instead of banana.
