Iftar Avocado & Date Smoothie

A thick, silky avocado smoothie sweetened only with dates and blended with milk — a rich, filling glass that Moroccans love at iftar for its lasting energy and creamy comfort. The avocado gives body and good fats, the dates the sweetness, and a little orange-blossom the fragrance.

Iftar Avocado & Date Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 10 soft dates, pitted
  • 700 ml cold milk
  • 1 tsp orange-blossom water
  • A few ice cubes
  • Chopped pistachios, to finish (optional)

Method

  1. 1

    Soften the dates

Soak firm dates in a little warm milk for 10 minutes so they blend smoothly.

  2. 2

    Blend

Blend the avocado flesh, dates, milk and orange-blossom water until completely smooth and creamy.

  3. 3

    Chill

Add ice and blend briefly, or pour over ice, to serve it properly cold.

  4. 4

    Adjust

Loosen with more milk if it is too thick, and taste for sweetness.

  5. 5

    Serve

Pour into glasses and scatter with pistachios if you like, serving immediately.

Chef's tips

  • Use ripe, buttery avocados; under-ripe ones stay grassy and won't blend silky.
  • Serve straight away — avocado drinks discolour and lose their fresh taste if left standing.
  • The dates should sweeten it fully; add honey only if your fruit is under-ripe.

Frequently asked questions

Why is avocado juice so popular in Morocco?

Rich, filling avocado drinks are a beloved treat in Moroccan juice bars year round, and their creamy, energy-dense nature makes them especially welcome at iftar.

Can I make it dairy-free?

Yes; almond or oat milk work well and keep it creamy, with the avocado providing the body.
